What does it check?
To check the Colon and Rectum (Large Intestine)
You may need a Colonoscopy:
To investigate bowel and abdominal symptoms like bleeding, change in bowel habits, abdominal discomfort
Strongly recommended for both men and women above 40 years of age with a family history of Colon Cancer
Recommended for both men and women above 45 years with no symptoms
To remove Polyps and may prevent or reduce the chance of a person developing Colorectal Cancer

Bowel preparation is required before the Colonoscopy to ensure good visualisation
Gastroscopy
What does it check?
To check the Esophagus, Stomach and Duodenum
You may need a Gastroscopy:
To investigate symptoms like Gastric discomfort, indigestion, reflux, difficulty swallowing
To check for Ulcers, Cancers, Gastritis and Helicobacter Pylori and other causes

What to Expect During a Colonoscopy / Gastroscopy

1. Preparation
You will have a detailed consultation with Dr Teoh to determine your needs and explanation of what to expect for the procedure. You will receive instructions for the bowel preparation.
2. Sedation
The procedure will be performed safely under sedation. You will be asleep and very comfortable.
3. Procedure
The procedure is performed in a specialised endoscopy centre with up-to-date facilities and fully trained staff as a day-case admission.
4. Recovery
You will be monitored for a short period. After you have had something to drink and eat, you can be discharged. The entire process from admission to discharge will usually be about 4 to 5 hours.

A colonoscopy may be recommended if you have persistent changes in bowel habits, blood in your stool, unexplained abdominal pain or discomfort, unexplained weight loss or iron-deficiency anaemia. Your doctor can assess your symptoms and determine whether a colonoscopy is needed.
For adults at average risk of colorectal cancer, screening is recommended from age 50, with a colonoscopy generally performed every 5-10 years. It is recommended for those with a family history of Colon Cancer, previous polyps or other risk factors to start screening earlier at about the age of 40 and screen more frequently.
A gastroscopy may be recommended if you have persistent heartburn or indigestion, upper abdominal pain or discomfort, difficulty swallowing, recurrent vomiting or unexplained weight loss. Your doctor can assess your symptoms and determine whether a gastroscopy is needed.
Yes. Polyps can often be removed and tissue samples taken during the colonoscopy or gastroscopy, avoiding the need for a separate procedure in many cases.
Your doctor may recommend further tests or treatment to investigate other possible causes. A normal scope can still be useful in ruling out certain conditions and guiding your next steps.
Both procedures are usually performed safely and comfortably with sedation to help minimise discomfort. You may experience some temporary bloating or mild discomfort afterwards, but this typically settles quickly.
